Abstract: A common theme in the study of magnetic materials is the ever-reducing spatial and  magneticfootprints which promise novel properties at reduced dimensions and the miniaturization  of technology. Supporting this research progress is the timely development of diamond-based  quantum sensing which provides the desired combination of field sensitivity, spatial resolution  and ambient operation. I will cover recent uses of quantum sensing to explore non-trivial spin  textures in thin magnetic films, down to an atomic layer. One intriguing insight enabled by quantum  sensing includes the ability to read out the vorticity of merons, antiferromagnetic textures, which  reveal their nature as emergent magnetic charges. I will provide directions for possible  developments of other quantum sensing platforms for the exploration of magnetic phenomena in  low dimensional systems.
